We know how to lose weight: reduce calories and increase movement. Yet we don’t do it. Or if we do, we gain it all back + some.
A sound diet and exercise plan are necessary, but not enough. Why do you want to lose weight ? That’s the mental side of weight loss.
If you’re feeling low, remember to ask yourself WHY did I start this journey? Your WHY will help put you back on the right track and help you stay there.
Your body will follow your mind……
- Even the perfect diet, without the mental part, won’t be successful long-term.
- In order to stick to your weight loss goal or vision, you must have a rock- solid foundation on WHY you want to lose weight.
- If your ‘why’ is not strong enough, you will fall back into your old ways.
- You want a ‘why’ motivating and compelling enough to keep you going when things get tough because things will get tough.
Your WHY should be Powerful
- When your motivation, discipline and will-power eventually wear off, you’re going to need an inspiring reason to keep going when you no longer feel like it.
- It’s your specific reason for doing what you do each day and the reason you commit the time to exercise and taking care of your body.
- Your WHY will keep you going back as your source of strength when you’re feeling weak.
- Without a compelling ‘why’ your dreams will just remain dreams.
You need a compelling ‘why’ that will drive you to take-action day in and day out, no matter what comes up!
Why is being in good health so important to you?
- Maybe it’s important to be a great mother, and your weight keeps you on the sidelines, unable to be the mom you want to be.
- Maybe your parents were not there for you because of their weight related illness, and you’re determined to be healthy for your family.
- In order to stick to your weight loss goal or vision, you must have a rock- solid reason on WHY you want to lose weight.
When you know your ‘WHY’ you will:
- Find the courage to take risks and try new things
- Stay motivated even when you don’t feel like it
- Keep moving towards your weight loss goal
- Not be distracted by the newest weight lost fad
Your ‘why’ must go deeper than:
- I want to be thin/skinny
- I want to fit into a pair of jeans
- I want to be a size 4
- I want more energy
As much as you may want these things, they are not inspiring enough to keep you motivated for the long run.
When writing your why, be sure to address these important questions:
- Be solution focused instead of problem focused.
- Focus on long-term success for your body, mind, and spirit instead of on quick fixes.
- It’s bigger than yourself.
- It ties into your purpose.
- It draws you closer to God and causes you to rely on Him-MORE
When you can focus on the above criteria, your motives will become clearer and your chances for success will be greatly increased.
Let’s Write down your ‘why’ by reflecting on these questions:
- Who is relying on you to be in excellent health?
- How will other areas of my life be impacted when I’m living healthier?
- My relationships?
- My family?
- My ministry?
Here’s an example of my ‘whys’ for being in excellent health:
- Because I know that my body is God’s temple
- To reflect God’s glory
- To change and affect the lives of other people around the world
- To leave a legacy for my family
- To live the abundant life that God has called me to live
